LINA is a collection that bridges craft and technology, history and futurism. It combines modern production techniques with traditional handwork, resulting in pieces that are both functional and evocative. With textures and forms that invite closer examination, each piece conveys a sense of presence through simplicity and material honesty.
The design of LINA is organic, timeless in its essence, and positioned between two temporal extremes. Drawing inspiration from both prehistoric forms and speculative future concepts, the collection bypasses any specific moment in time, creating pieces that feel enduring and quietly evocative.
Each piece has a flowing, almost eroded shape, as if shaped by time itself. Its surface is marked by subtle, rhythmic impressions—hand-gouged in the final stages to emphasise the human touch and add crisp detail to the rounded form. The interplay of light and shadow on each piece brings depth and texture to its simple, functional design.
The wood pieces were crafted with the help of a cooperative of master woodcarvers from Val Gardena in the Italian Dolomites, a region renowned for its centuries-old woodcraft traditions. Initial shaping was achieved using CNC robotics, which translated precise digital models from 3D software into physical forms. It is in the final steps, completed by hand, that each piece is given a unique tactile depth, carrying forward the region’s legacy in a contemporary context.
Included in the collection is a plaster lamp, sculpted by hand in my atelier. Its abstract, futuristic form shares the organic language of the wood pieces, with a raw, archaic quality achieved through traditional sculpting techniques. The lamp aligns with the collection’s speculative, organic theme, creating a cohesive visual language across the materials. (Pieter Maes, 2024)
